Virginia's New Governor Creates History as First Female State Leader

Throughout two and a half centuries, Virginia has been led by seventy-four state executives, all of them male. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by being elected as the state's inaugural woman leader in Virginia's records.

A Campaign Focused On Economic Concerns and Strategic Opposition

The former US congresswoman and CIA case officer triumphed with a election strategy that highlighted economic pressures and deliberately opposed the former president's agenda as opposed to the individual.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on 7 August 1979, she moved to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her father was an army veteran who later pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.

She attended the Virginia's flagship university, receiving a diploma in French literature. After graduating, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before turning to a life of service.

“I was raised knowing that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” Spanberger told supporters at a gathering in coastal Virginia over the weekend.

Public Service Career

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she handled involving narcotics, child predators and financial criminals. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the sole female on the operation squad. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and overseas.

Family Decision

In 2014, she and her spouse, an engineer, considered their future. Living on the west coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They pulled out a world map and inquired of their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we opted to pivot from a federal career, to service to community because she was right. Everyone we love are in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in the commonwealth, she joined a grassroots group, which combats gun violence, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she chose to run for Congress, which others told her was a “impossible task” because no Democrat had won the congressional seat in half a century.

“But I saw what the president was doing with his executive power and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my member of Congress consistently oppose the healthcare law. And I knew I had to step up. So for the record: I was victorious.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In the capital, she quickly became part of the centrist group, a collection of centrist and budget-conscious Democrats. She concentrated on less visible matters: bringing broadband to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and support for former troops.

She earned a standing for working with opposing parties and was frequently recognized as the most bipartisan member of the Virginia delegation. She was vocal about messaging that she felt alienated centrists, warning her fellow Democrats against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in tight races.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was called a member of the “pragmatic group” in contrast to the progressive “squad” of the New York representative.

State Leadership Bid

In that autumn, she declared she would not seek re-election for a another term and would instead run for governor in the next election.

Her platform focused on ideas of public service, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her intelligence experience lent her authority on national security issues and she described public service as a vocation instead of a career.

Successful Campaign

This helped her to withstand Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on social topics, including the assertion that she is an radical on individual freedoms and transgender healthcare.

Spanberger, who stated that individual districts should determine whether transgender students can join competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the candidate more out of step with the middle of the Virginia electorate.
