The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
