New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a recent development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to support the former governor in communities where he maintains strong support.

“It's essential to energize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this race is,” the mayor stated.

Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
