Our team is verifying images and video posted earlier today that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow. Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way. The initial step to check the location of where the images were from relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia. Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage. Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken. We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
