The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will listen to a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The central message of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers aided by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the charity, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
