Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed anger after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.

The Content That Provoked the Debate

The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in armed forces or intelligence roles.

"Similar to us, you all took an oath to safeguard and support this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject illegal orders, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to execute directives that violate the legal system or our constitution."

Trump's Incensed Reply

The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Officials Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a unified declaration censuring the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no place in the United States," they stated. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our country with great national pride and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky calls for execution against congressional representatives, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme online messages and recant his violent language before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.

Officials' Firm Answer

The officials who appeared in the video also published a declaration.

"We are former service members and security experts who care for this United States and took an oath to defend and defend the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to honor it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important obligation."

"What's most telling is that the president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They added: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the ex-president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."

Additional Partisan Responses

The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of government members."

He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."

The GOP leader justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "It is very harmful, you have leading members of Congress instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also reportedly informed media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and determine all that."

White House Statement

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."

"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the representative stated. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She said: "The purity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally encouraging."
