Cameroonian Opposition Leader to Face Legal Proceedings Concerning Post-Election Violence, Government Announces

Election Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious that Paul Biya has secured an eighth term

The nation's Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has stated that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over allegations that he instigated "violent election protests".

At least four protesters have been killed during skirmishes between law enforcement and protesters since the electoral process on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya winning an eighth consecutive term.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he was the true winner, a statement rejected by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on protesters have worried the international community, with the UN, AU and EU urging restraint.

Official's Claims

Recently, Nji charged Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he referred to as "unlawful" protests leading to the fatalities, and also rebuked him for announcing success in the presidential race.

He added that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.

Poll Figures

Cameroon's leader, who took control in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the October 12 election with over half of the vote, compared to a significant minority for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.

Challenger's Position

The opposition figure is remains silent to the government's decision to try him, but he had previously stated that he would not accept a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being detained.

On election result day, he claimed that security forces opened fire on demonstrators gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, fatally wounding at least two people.

Inquiry Launched

Recently, the government official announced that an investigation would be initiated into clashes prior to and following the announcement of the election results.

"During these attacks, some of the criminals lost their lives," he commented, without giving a specific number of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the incidents.

Nji further mentioned that several officers of the police and military also suffered serious injuries.

Current Situation

While Nji asserted the situation throughout Cameroon was now stable, protesters remain active in various areas of the nation, especially in Douala and Garoua, where protesters established obstructions on that day, and ignited rubber on the streets.

Analysts caution that the post-electoral violence could lead the country into a governmental instability.
