Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book lodging after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was happening and all the youth hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Coming from Singapore, I considered maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, believing I might spend the evening somewhere that was open all night. This was not ideal at my peak to succeed at the admissions interview the next day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more folks with such compassion.

It seems I seemed confused because a young woman noticed me loitering in downtown and wondered if everything was alright. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where the important interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. This gave me the bathroom and a protected spot and safe for the evening.

With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and was oblivious about things like that. As a dad now, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. I hope life has rewarded her generosity tenfold. The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
